Senior Adult Activity Center

The Ohatchee Senior Adult Activity Center (OSAAC) is a comfortable gathering place where area citizens 55 years of age and older can meet, chat, travel, play games, and fellowship 5 days a week. A monthly calendar of planned activities is published by the Director and is available at the Center during normal operating hours. The OSAAC has a large screen TV, small library with seating area, overhead projector and screen, sound system, and lots of tables and chairs to accommodate the Members. Sponsored primarily by the Town of Ohatchee, the OSAAC also conducts fund-raising activities to offset the cost of day trips, birthday parties, and other functions for its Members.

Important Events:

1) Thanksgiving Meal – Members and families meet at the Center for a homecooked or catered traditional Thanksgiving Meal.

2) Christmas Meal – Members and Families meet for a home-cooked or catered mean, entertainment, and gift exchange

3) Christmas on the Town – Held the 1st Saturday in December at the Center from 9AM – 12 PM. Area children (and parents) are invited to attend this event, decorate cookies, visit with Santa, and enjoy light refreshments. The Center is always decorated for the season and provides the perfect kick-off for the season.

4) Mother’s Day Event – This can be a luncheon or dinner, catered meal with entertainment and door prizes. There’s normally a gift basket available for a raffle, proceeds going to the Center. Members decorate tables with different themes making this a very festive event.

5) Father’s Day Event – This can be a luncheon or dinner, catered meal with entertainment and door prizes. There’s normally a gift basket available for raffle, proceeds going to the Center.

6) Bake Sale – This event is normally held on Good Friday, either at a local business, the County Administration Building in Anniston, or at the Center. Homemade cakes, cookies, pies, cupcakes, candy, etc are available. Crafts, made by the Members, are also available for a small donation. Special orders are welcome and may be accommodated throughout the year.

Activities:

1) Card and Other Games – Daily Card Games (Phase Ten, Trash, etc) Dominoes, Checkers, Puzzles, Bean Bag Toss, and Video Bowling

2) Coffee and Chat – Held Daily. Drop by and you might find some homemade goodies or snacks to go with your morning coffee and newspaper.

3) Crafts – Held Weekly, this includes making various holiday ornaments, baskets, wooden crafts, painting, crochet, knitting, etc. Occasionally the Center hosts an acrylic painting class on site for Members.

4) Spiritual Time – Held Every Wednesday at 10AM. Members discuss spiritual issues, the lessons of the Bible, and how to apply them to daily living.

5) Day Trips – Taken Several Das per month. Trips to various museums, flea markets, restaurants, health fairs, apple orchards, strawberry patches, malls, craft shows, other senior adult activity centers, etc. Stop by and pick up a calendar, or contact the Director for more information.

6) Bingo – Held two to three times per month. Local community agencies host these games and provide small prizes which include household items and snack items. Check the calendar for dates and times.

7) Exercise Classes: Held Weekly. Low impact exercises via DVR or live hosting. Check the calendar for dates and times.

8) Birthday Parties: Held monthly on the last Monday of the month at 10 AM. Have Cake and ice cream to celebrate all Member birthdays for the month.

9) Basket Weaving – Held as needed. Ohatchee Seniors have long been known for basket making. A class is occasionally held (at cost) for anyone desiring to learn this skill. Contact the Center Director for additional information or dates of next class.

10) Auctions – Held quarterly. Members and the community donate items to the Center. Auctions start at 9 AM at the Center. Proceeds go to the Center.

11) Ohatchee Quilting and Sewing Group – Members who meet and sew on projects, primarily quilting projects, meet several times each month. This group has grown from 12 to 30 in three years and is one of the most popular activities at the Center. The members often work on a group project such as a Block of the Month quilt, pillow cases for charity, and block swaps. The group also pieces, finishes, and donates a quilt or other project annually as a fund-raiser for the Center. They attend quilt retreats, go on “fabric shop hops” and attend Quilt Expos.

More Information:

Volunteers are always needed at the OSAAC to help with special activities, perform routine decorating, organizing, painting, and flower bed maintenance, etc. Contact the Director if you or your children would like to donate some hours to help the Center. The OSAAC Advisory Council has four elected officers and five at-large members who meet quarterly to insure the Center is meeting the needs of area seniors and to make recommendations for additional programs, equipment, and funding.
